LO1: Task 4- The Global Village Theory- 1964

  • Theorist - Marshall McLuhan 
  • Book - Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man 
  • one day we would live in a 'global village' owing advancements in technology, we would be more interconnected with one another, over different sides of the world
  • might lead to a tribal mentality - in-groups and outgroups, lead to discrimination, in political context, people are being controlled 
  • this was said before internet or any web or computer systems 
  • Twitterati - people who use Twitter and influence others by picking on other people, their opinion is right, influencing popular culture, e.g Pierce Morgan 

The Idea of Modern Society being a 'global village':  
  • Advantages: 
    • easier to communicate with people across the world 
    • product distribution can be done on a larger scale 
    • access information easily 
  • Disadvantages:
    • discrimination 
    • controlled public through government e.g China, J-walked, credit 
    • allows people to spread false information
